What automation is

The three ideas behind every automated plant

New to the field? Start here, then explore the guides.

  1. PLC

In one line: The brain of a machine

A small, tough computer that reads sensors and switches motors, lights and valves on or off, following a program you write.

  2. SCADA and HMI

In one line: The screens people use to watch and control machines

HMI is the touchscreen on one machine, like an ATM screen. SCADA is the control-room view of the whole factory.

  3. Control systems

In one line: Like a thermostat for a whole factory

Measure, compare, adjust: keeping speed, temperature and pressure just right, all day, without anyone touching a knob.
